Deka Design is a boutique furniture design, manufacturing and consultancy workshop based in Brisbane, Australia. A family business built on the tradition of furniture craft, we design and manufacture furniture for commercial and residential interiors, and provide furniture consultancy and restoration services.
With our 90 combined experience in furniture and interiors we promote excellence in all aspects of furniture design, manufacturing and after sales service, and strive to be a leader in support services for architects and designers. We encourage a collaborative approach to design, seeking long term professional partnerships within the architecture and design community, with those that share our values of design integrity and manufacturing quality.
Lasse Kinnunen began his career over forty years ago as a teenager in his father's furniture company in Finland. During this time he worked with antiques and modern furniture and learnt the traditional skills of woodworking, french polishing, restoration, upholstery and furniture making. A move to Australia led to the start of a furniture manufacturing and restoration company with wife Helena, which has evolved and expanded with the years of experience to Deka Design, a complete furniture design, manufacturing and consultancy company. Lasse was awarded the Queensland Smart State Designer of the Year in 2006 and is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia. More information on Lasse's work is also found on his website www.kinnunen.com.au
Helena Kinnunen has been working alongside Lasse for 40 years, running their furniture businesses in Australia and Finland. Her hands-on knowledge of fabrics, leathers, pattern making, sewing and upholstery complement Lasse’s skills, together developing Deka Design’s evolving collection of furniture and custom furniture pieces for clients. Helena’s management of client projects ensure that each project is of high quality, is delivered within budget and on time.
Nora Kinnunen graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mech) and began her career as an aeronautical design engineer designing structural modifications and repairs for helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Following the completion of a Master of Engineering Management, Nora’s work expanded into project management of Army Aviation projects, course instruction and writing of tender responses and regulatory standards. Following the move to her family’s furniture company in 2000, Nora’s cross-disciplinary approach to design has included all aspects of furniture design, client consultation, retail and project management, and exploration of broad sustainability issues in the interiors industry. Since completing a Master of Design Futures her recent work has included urban design and climate change adaptation projects, and researching the potential agency of craft within a sustainable material culture. In 2014 Nora commenced her PhD at Queensland University of Technology's School of Design. Her research topic, based on her passion for craft practice, is an investigation of the relationship between craft practice and economic life, and the role that craft can play in sustainable futures.
