Deka Design is a boutique furniture design, manufacturing and consultancy workshop based in Brisbane, Australia. A family business built on the tradition of furniture craft, we design and manufacture furniture for commercial and residential interiors, and provide furniture consultancy and restoration services.
With our 90 combined experience in furniture and interiors we promote excellence in all aspects of furniture design, manufacturing and after sales service, and strive to be a leader in support services for architects and designers. We encourage a collaborative approach to design, seeking long term professional partnerships within the architecture and design community, with those that share our values of design integrity and manufacturing quality.
For several years now we have been working in a wonderful creative community of Fiskars in Finland during the summer season, promoting our furniture for the European market, with customers in Finland, England and Switzerland.
We continue to strengthen the bonds with other local creative businesses, by joining our long term Brisbane collaborators Luxxbox in their creative community and workshop in Eagle Farm. Being under the same roof with their design team and fully equipped workshop allows Lasse and Helena's extensive skills to be put to good use on exciting collaborations. In January 2018 we moved our School of Furniture to the Gold Coast into Relative Creative's Community Hub in Burleigh Heads. We run all of our furniture courses now in this space. We maintain our own custom design and manufacture capabilities, providing furniture design, manufacturing and restoration services to the design community and the public, both in Australia and in Finland.
Lasse Kinnunen began his career over forty years ago as a teenager in his father's furniture company in Finland. During this time he worked with antiques and modern furniture and learnt the traditional skills of woodworking, french polishing, restoration, upholstery and furniture making. A move to Australia led to the start of a furniture manufacturing and restoration company with wife Helena, which has evolved and expanded with the years of experience to Deka Design, a complete furniture design, manufacturing and consultancy company. Lasse was awarded the Queensland Smart State Designer of the Year in 2006 and is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia.
Helena Kinnunen has been working alongside Lasse for 40 years, running their furniture businesses in Australia and Finland. Her hands-on knowledge of fabrics, leathers, pattern making, sewing and upholstery complement Lasse’s skills, together developing Deka Design’s evolving collection of furniture and custom furniture pieces for clients. Helena’s management of client projects ensure that each project is of high quality, is delivered within budget and on time.
Nora Kinnunen graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mech) and began her career as an aeronautical design engineer designing structural modifications and repairs for helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Following the completion of a Master of Engineering Management, Nora’s work expanded into project management of Army Aviation projects, course instruction and writing of tender responses and regulatory standards. Following the move to her family’s furniture company in 2000, Nora’s cross-disciplinary approach to design has included all aspects of furniture design, client consultation, retail and project management, and exploration of broad sustainability issues in the interiors industry. Since completing a Master of Design Futures in 2010 she has worked in trans-disciplinary teams on projects in the fields of craft, climate change adaptation and architecture, and is a sessional academic and researcher at Queensland University of Technology, School of Design and in the Science and Engineering Faculty. She is also completing a PhD at the School of Design, researching the relationship between professional craft practice and the business environment in a regional community.
